Dramaworks receives grant; offers free afterschool drama program for teens

Dramaworks at West End Theatre is starting the new year right with a new grant from California Arts Council to work with Plumas County youth.

The SWEET program, which meets on Wednesday afternoons at the West End Theatre, will be free this semester for students in seventh through 12th grades. Students all over the county are eligible to join regardless of school affiliation or homeschool. The class starts afterschool at 3:30 p.m. and runs till 5 p.m. weekly.

Students learn the art of improv, comedy, memorization, and public speaking among other skills. Students also will have field trips to see professional and college productions.

This semester’s class is co-taught by Tina Terrazas and Angela Hauner. Terrazas and Hauner bring years of acting experience to the classroom.

The Creative Youth Development grant runs from 2023 to 2025 and culminates in student performances—producing a “culturally relevant, inclusive, equitable and entertaining play.”

Interested students should come to next Wednesday, January 18 class. For more information, contact dramaworks at (530) 283-1956 or email [email protected].
