Free mattress recycling offered

Plumas County residents are invited to take advantage of free mattress recycling during a special collection event being held in Delleker at the Delleker Transfer Station, 73980 Industrial Way, on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This event will be subject to early closure if the trailer fills up. Mattress and box springs will be accepted for free.

The Department of Public Works, together with the State of California Mattress Recycling Council will be hosting this, and other future events throughout Plumas County. Funding for this program comes from a portion of fees collected when new mattress are purchased.

Years ago, very few used mattresses were recycled. Furthermore, there was no free program offered to the public. As a result, many mattresses have been left on the side of roads or in the middle of our beautiful forests. Cleanup events that have been made available to other communities have been a huge success, and Public Works is excited to have the opportunity to help clean up and participate in the recycling of these mattresses.

The Delleker event will be the first such event that the Solid Waste Division of the Plumas County Public Works Department has coordinated. The department staff is looking forward to hosting other events throughout Plumas County in the future.

Free disposal is not available for mattress dealers or other businesses. No other furniture or bedding products can be accepted.
