Funds raised to help fire victims in Plumas County

Mohawk Valley Stewardship Council (MVSC) president, Mark Cowan, just sent a check for $10,000 to the Common Good Community Foundation (CGCF) to help victims of the Dixie and other Plumas County fires. There is more coming but the volunteers at White Sulphur Springs Ranch wanted to get the aid out as soon as possible. The $10,000 is just the first down payment and will be matched by the CGCF.

The MVSC held a raffle at the Professional Artists & Crafters (PAC) marketplace in Graeagle Park the weekend of August 21 and 22.  A Weber Barbecue was donated as a grand prize by Mountain Hardware and Sports in Blairsden. Vendors at the Fair contributed by donating individual craft items of their own.  At the end of the day on Sunday, the grand total from the raffle was $4,114.  In addition to the raffle, the MVSC had a set up a donation link on their website.  Contributions are continuing, but so far, the amount contributed via the website is well over $7,000.  A final check to CGCF will be forthcoming when the link is closed in the next few weeks. The prime mover for both the raffle and the website link was MVSC volunteer and webmaster, Tim Buckhout. Tim also brought his Porta-Saloon and sold liquid refreshments on both days. He was assisted by over 20 MVSC volunteers who took shifts manning the raffle table. In his letter to the CGCF Mark Cowan said, “We’re extremely proud of our community that joined together in many ways to help us raise these funds.”

The MVSC’s main effort is to restore the historic White Sulphur Springs Ranch for use by the community but their dedicated volunteers jumped right in to try to help the victims of the Dixie fire.
