Groundhog Fever Fest full of fun activities this Saturday
Submitted by the Quincy Chamber of Commerce
Get out of your hole and join us on Saturday, Feb. 4, for our Annual Groundhog Fever Festival — an afternoon of fun and entertainment! The party starts at 1 p.m. with the classic Chili Cook-off, music, mini-contests (with prizes) and more back-to-back all afternoon! Our local favorite buffoons, WAD (Wayne and Dave) will be there to pester…I mean…emcee… the event with help from DJ Ducky and Entertainment530 providing the soothing sounds of fun, upbeat music that will appeal to all!
This year we have 8 chili cook-off contestants: Our Savior Lutheran Church, the Curmudgeons for Christ (will this be THE holy war of chili?!), Plumas County Sheriff’s Employees Association, Feather River Food Co-op, Feather River Resource Conservation District, Grocery Outlet, Big Daddy’s Guide Service, and the dynamic duo of Dale Hays and Shawn Adams.
We have lots of vendors and information booths lined up including Gebrauchshund Leather Works, Plumas Co. Library, VFW, James Lees Dreams and Copper Fern Studio, Feather River College, Cross Stitchin’, Amy Napoleon, Soroptimist International of Quincy, High Sierra Mermaid, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Plumas LMJ Creations, Marv’s Metal Sculptures, Veterans Services, Plumas Co. Public Health, and Meadow Valley Botanicals .
For the kids and young-at-heart, Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship is bringing back their mini-bike track and Quircus is sponsoring the Kid Zone. The Kids Zone will be located on the west side of the Courthouse, and the mini-bike track will be on the south end of Court Street.
Speaking of fun things to do, Big Daddy’s Guide Service is bringing their fully-equipped, decked out, guide service trailer! Step inside to see where Bryan can take you for the best fishing trip ever! The trailer will be located next to Dame Shirley Plaza.
Who doesn’t love beer with their chili? Brewing Lair returns with their beer booth and for those who don’t love beer…the Quincy Chamber of Commerce will be selling wine! High Sierra Sheep Co. will also be there to serve up some yummy lamb sliders, lamb phillys, and…get this…retail lamb by-the-cut!
At 1:30 the fun begins on the Courthouse steps with the Whip Cream Wrangle sponsored by SavMor Foods. This is our version of a pie-eating contest – watch as contestants (yep – you can join too!) dig around face first in a pie tin full of whip cream to find the bubble gum ball. Whoever blows a bubble first, wins!
At 1:45 join Quintopia for the Flip Cup Fight. Two teams compete against each other to see who can finish drinking beer and then flip their cups right-side-up first.
At 2:00 Plumas Performing Arts will announce the winner of the Honorary Mayor of Quincy Award! For more information on our Mayoral Candidates and to see who’s in the race and how you can vote, visit their page at https://plumas-performing-arts.square.site/quincy-outdoor-theater-honorary-mayor-fundraiser.
At 2:15 kids are up for the fun Thumb Wrestle Tussle sponsored by Quincy Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! Your kid does NOT need to know Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to compete in this contest! Who’s more dexterous? Who has the biggest thumb? But really…does size even matter?
At 2:30 join us for The Bach! Looking for love in all the wrong places? This is your chance to make your dreams a reality!
How much snow could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck snow? Our local favorite prognosticator, Chuck Wood, will be making his annual prediction at 3:00 p.m. Will we have more winter or more spring? Only Chuck knows!

At 3:30 we have Arm Wrestle-Mania – it’s your chance to show off your muscles…or lack thereof!
At 3:45 all the facial hair fanatics will proudly display their mustaches and beards to the delight of us all. Don’t have a mustache or beard but want to join in the fun? Social Services will have a facial hair creation station set up for adults and kids alike to DIY their own!
At 4:00 p.m. the afternoon wraps up with the winners of the Chili Cook-off announced. We have GINORMOUS trophies to be awarded to the People’s Choice, Judge’s Choice and Best Decorated Booth winners!
It’s free to join in the mini-contests, and ticket prices are only $5 per person for the chili tasting (which also gets you one vote toward the People’s Choice), and $6 per drink for beer or wine. Cash, PayPal or Venmo will be accepted.
Another funtastic event sponsored by the Quincy Chamber of Commerce, and coordinated with maximum effort by Matthew Kitchens, James Wilson and Cheryl Kolb!
