Bewick’s wren is just one of the dozens of species of birds that can be found around Lake Almanor and surrounding areas. Maybe you will spot it during this year's bound count. Photo courtesy Plumas Audubon Society

It’s time for the 2022 Christmas Bird Count

The annual Audubon Society-sponsored Christmas Bird Count is fast approaching. Started in the late 1800’s as an alternative to the popular Christmas “Side Hunt” contests (bird hunts), the CBC has become an important international event involving over 80,000 volunteers. The data consistently gathered over 125 years provides valuable information regarding bird migration patterns and populations, as well as the consequences of global warming and habitat disruption.

Plumas Audubon Society welcomes its members, as well as other interested volunteers, to participate in one or more of the all-day counting events conducted in Plumas County. The days start early and usually extend until sunset to maximize the opportunity to observe and tally birds. Experienced birders and interested newcomers are welcome.
