May is student art month; reception May 6 at Plumas Arts

May is student art month, and for the entire month, Plumas Arts gallery at 525 Main St. in Quincy is featuring the work of Plumas Charter School and Quincy Jr/Sr High School students. An opening reception for this show will be held on Friday, May 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the gallery.

Quincy High School:

For the past 12 years the Quincy Jr/Sr High School art program has been led by Danielle Frid. In her classes, students are encouraged to explore a variety of media. Art students started off this year creating expressive mixed media selfies wearing masks. During the first semester students explored linoleum block printmaking, and drawing techniques. As they transitioned into the second semester, they continued to explore color including: oil pastels, colored pencil, digital drawing, watercolors, ceramics and painting. All art students collaborated with local 1st and 2nd graders at Pioneer Elementary. Elementary students learned about line, color, shape, and texture while drawing monsters with their art specialist, Mrs. Lemnah. Junior and Senior high students were challenged to choose a child’s monster drawing and reimagine it! Stop by the Plumas Arts gallery during the month of May to see a selection of these works.

Plumas Charter School:

Art is an essential part of a student’s education at Plumas Charter School. Each week, art teacher Rebecca Glaspy visits all of TK-8th grade classrooms and offers a High School art class elective. Students learn many different techniques from perspective drawing, to pinch pots, to self-portraits and there is an art history lesson incorporated into most projects.

Rebecca Glaspy has been the art teacher at the Charter School for 7 years and is inspired by the art of young artists. There is never a dull moment in the art classroom.

Patti’s Thunder Café Art Display:

Plumas Arts also coordinates the art display at Patti’s Thunder Café. For the months of May and June 2022, Patti’s Thunder Cafe is exhibiting a collection of local artists prints framed in the Plumas Arts Frame Shop. Plumas Arts Frame Shop offers custom cut mats & framing at affordable prices. Visit plumasarts.org for more information or call (530) 283-3402 for an appointment.
