Mohawk Community Art Faire on Thanksgiving weekend Featured artist is from Loyalton
The Mohawk Community Resource Center (MCRC) is again presenting its annual Art Faire on the two days after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 29, and Saturday, Nov. 30. Each year a featured artist is named by the advisory board that represents the best of the arts and crafts to be shown at the event.
This year the featured artist is Bobby Wheeler of Loyalton. He uses computerized numerical control (CNC) to produce carvings in wood. He started building the CNC machine in his garage about two years ago and after a number of trial and error procedures finally got it working perfectly. He uses various woods like poplar, pine, oak and redwood to produce carvings of extreme detail.
His background and experience were a natural for this kind of craft. He dealt with sculptured engraving at the Hallmark Greeting Card Company in Kansas City. He also ran a business in San Diego doing engraving, foil stamping and embossing for the paper industry. Wheeler says he now has a scanner that can scan a person and turn him or her into a wood carving.
The Mohawk Community Art Faire is a holiday tradition in Plumas County. As usual, the event will be held at the Graeagle Fire Hall located at 7620 Highway 89. Doors open at 10 a.m. both days.
There will be a drawing again this year featuring items donated by the artists. Dozens of cookies, handmade by the volunteers, will also be available.
MCRC is a service of Plumas Rural Services and serves to enrich the lives of the residents and visitors of the surrounding communities in a friendly atmosphere. A variety of activities take place at the center daily.
