Portola mayor and longtime resident John Larrieu passed away Tuesday, June 20. According to City Manager Robert Meacher, “John will be missed by many friends, family and colleagues. Through his many years of public service, he was a well respected city leader, teacher, friend and musician.”

The musical career of Larrieu began in the U.S. Air Force Band program, playing tuba for four years in bands in South Carolina, Tokyo, Japan and Texas.

After graduating from San Jose State University with a degree in music education, Larrieu received his master’s degree from Southern Oregon University.

Larrieu taught music in high schools in California for 35 years, including seven years in Etna, one year in San Lorenzo Valley and 28 years in Portola, and, upon retiring, worked for 14 years in the position of executive director of the California Music Educators Association. Larrieu also served as chair of the National State Managers of NAfME for two years.

Among Larrieu’s many honors, he received the CMEA Music Education Hall of Fame, the CBDA Don Schmeer Friends of Music Award, CMEA Lifetime Achievement Award, CBDA Lifetime Achievement Award, and he was named a Lowell Mason Fellow of NAfME.

Larrieu served his community as mayor for several years and as a city councilman for the past 17 years. He also served on the LAFCo Commission and the Plumas County Transportation Commission.

After fully retiring, Larrieu continued to serve on the Portola city council, as well as playing string bass with the Reno Pops Orchestra and was the past president on the board of directors of the orchestra.

Bruce Ross, district director in the office of Assemblyman Brian Dahle, stated, “The legislature in the capitol office will be holding an adjournment in memory in the future for John Larrieu.”

Services celebrating the life of Larrieu will be held Saturday, July 8, at 10 a.m., at the Portola Holy Family Catholic Church.
