School district offers options for Indian Valley students
Editor’s note: Plumas Unified School District Superintendent Terry Oestreich released the following information today regarding options for Indian Valley students. During a special board meeting last night, Aug. 24, Oestreich and Assistant Superintendent Kristy Warren shared a lot of information that indicated the school district and Plumas Charter School could work together to jointly offer classes in Taylorsville, but that is less likely to happen now.
Over the last two weeks, many conversations have taken place in regards to educational offerings in Indian Valley. Last evening at the Board meeting, we received direction to pursue outlining the details of a memorandum of understanding for a collaboration with Plumas Charter School. After further discussion this morning and due to challenges related to the continued evacuation orders, such collaboration was found to be impractical, and could result in the further delay of the start of school. In addition, the structures and regulations associated with the two programs make combining them into one significantly challenging.
Therefore, the following options will be available for Greenville Elementary and Junior/Senior High families:
Elementary

Plumas Unified will offer TK-6 at the former Taylorsville Elementary site. Current Greenville Elementary students will remain enrolled and no further action by families is needed. Families transferring to another school will need to contact the new school to enroll. We are working to start school for our elementary students as soon as possible, and will follow the previously determined, Governing Board approved, 10 day post evacuation warning lifted start date.
Junior/Senior High
As much as we want to offer 7th-12th grade in Taylorsville, due to multiple challenges we are unable to offer this during the 21-22 school year. In order to offer a high school experience including in person classes, extra curricular activities, athletics and all aspects of the high school experience, 7th-12th grade students are invited to attend another PCOE/PUSD school of their choice. For our student athletes, we have worked with CIF to allow for a waiver to play sports at another school upon enrollment.
Transportation
Transportation routes are being evaluated from Indian Valley to Chester or Quincy schools for 1st -12th grade students. Bus routes will be established based on need.
Independent Study
Independent Study remains an option for families in TK-12th grades following new guidelines. If you’d like to enroll in this option or obtain more information, please contact Principal Jennifer Scheel at 530 284-7195, ext. 2701. Additional information on independent study can be found on our website: https://www.pcoe.k12.ca.us/apps/pages/EducationalOptions
We understand this is a very difficult time. Our other school sites are actively working to welcome Indian Valley students to their campus for those that choose that option.
Our next board meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8th and we will discuss further details regarding curriculum, facilities, internet, evacuation orders and more. For further information, please contact Principal Jennifer Scheel at 530 284-7195, ext. 2701.
Thank you for your ongoing support and patience as we work through the multiple facets of providing educational options in Taylorsville.
