Sierra County Sheriff warns of hazardous conditions on 49

With Highway 80 closed, motorists are looking for alternative routes and the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office is saying that Highway 49 is not an option. It is closed to traffic past Calpine to Downieville (except to locals).

Zero visibility was reported between Sierraville and Sattley. Two-foot drifts are reported on the road between Loyalton and Sierraville. Use extreme caution and avoid travel if possible.

It was reported that last night several vehicles became stuck and it took hours to reach the occupants. Vehicles are not being pulled out, but rather the occupants are being taken to Sierraville. The short-staffed department is asking motorists to please obey the road closure signs.
