Kathy Rowson takes first with her colorful large quilt, titled Mom’s Hugs. Rowson created the quilt for a woman named Edith Gonzalez in 2018, in memory of Edith’s mother, Rogelia, who passed away when Edith was only 2 ½ years old and left a few handmade items. “Edith had longed to have a way to consolidate these items into a quilt that she could wrap herself up in and feel like her mom was giving her a hug,” Rowson noted. “Drawing on the colorful Mexican culture and harmonizing with the colors in the handmade items themselves, I came up with this.” Photo by Lauren Westmoreland

Donna Crary strikes a pose next to her winning challenge quilt, titled Land of the Free Because of the Brave. Crary said, “I made this quilt as a tribute to the men in my family who have served or are serving in the military. In the top row is my husband Jim, who was an Airman First Class. Row two shows my niece, Rebecca, with her husband, Master at Arms Senior Chief Doug Brooks. Doug is still serving in the Navy! Also, in that row is my father-in-law, Lieutenant Ronald Crary, and my father, Seaman First Class William Bayliff. I am very proud of them all.” Photo by Lauren Westmoreland
