Summer programs for kids need kids

The numbers are down.

While the signs leading to Greenville might boast 1,200-plus inhabitants, perhaps there are less children present in summer these days than was previously thought.

The number of kids attending both the free breakfast and lunch program at the Greenville Elementary School, and the free swim time at the pool in Taylorsville are down considerably than what numbers have been in previous years.

Advertising for both has been extensive — from marquee advertising in front of Greenville High School and social media posts to word of mouth.

Last Tuesday, Taylorsville pool saw only two kids the whole day — and those showed up 30 minutes before the end of the swim day.

There’s no need to sign up in advance for either program. Kids just need to show up for the breakfast and lunch program (7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.; and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) at the cafeteria. It’s available for anyone under 18 and free.

The Taylorsville Pool is open for swim time between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, for $3 a day for kids. If they have an adult with them its free for ages 0 to 4.
