The Graeagle community supports Portola High golf team

The golfing community in Graeagle has responded in an extraordinary way to aid the development of golf with young people in the area.

Youth on Course

All of the golf courses have agreed to participate in the Northern California Golf Association’s unique program called Youth on Course. This program was initiated a few years back as a means of fostering greater access for youth to play golf. In this program, golf courses agree to charge young people under 21 who have registered with the NCGA $5 to play golf. The NCGA agrees to pay the difference to the sponsoring club.

By joining the Youth on Course program, golf courses in Graeagle have created a pathway for many young people to play golf. It also enables summer visitors accompanied by their children to play golf.

Portola High School golf team news

An unprecedented number of students (32) signed up for the golf team this spring. Nearly half of those signing up were girls. In order to respond to this fantastic level of enthusiasm, there has been a remarkable level of cooperation by local professionals at the courses. The girls will be able to practice and receive instruction at Whitehawk ranch under the supervision of Head professional Tad McCormick with the assistance of a local resident of Whitehawk Ranch, Barbara Competello.

Due to the large number of boys interested in playing golf, Brandon Bowling at Plumas Pines has agreed to take a group of 7-8 players for instruction. Plumas Pines Men’s Golf Association donated $600 for the golf team. The long-standing cooperation of Bob Klein at Graeagle Meadows enables the remainder of the team to practice and play matches. Matches will begin in early April.

Donations

Many of the students are new to the game and did not have equipment. We have received club donations from golfers as far away as Atlanta, GA, Richmond Country Club in Richmond, and Whitehawk. Whitehawk Women’s golf group also donated 5 pair of shoes. If you would like to make a donation, please contact William Davis at [email protected].
