Winter storm watches in effect for Christmas in Plumas

The National Weather Service reports that a series of winter storms will affect Northern California this weekend impacting Plumas County.

A winter storm watch has been issued for Western Plumas County/Lassen Park from early Friday, Dec. 25, morning through Saturday morning, Dec. 26.

A winter storm watch begins a little later in the day for Eastern Plumas and Sierra counties. It’s expected to begin Friday afternoon, Dec. 25, through Saturday morning, Dec. 26.

For Western Plumas and Lassen Peak, total snow accumulations of 12 to 18 inches are expected above 5,000 to 6,000 feet, with localized amounts up to 3 feet over the peaks possible. Lighter accumulations of 3 to 6 inches possible down to 3,000 to 4,000 feet. A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel. For Eastern Plumas and Sierra counties, heavy snow is possible above 5000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches, mainly west of highway 395, with up to 1 foot possible for higher passes. For elevations below 5,000 feet, snow may accumulate up to 2 inches. Travel could be very difficult over northeast California Friday night, with heavy snow producing poor   visibility at times. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.
