Letter to the Editor: Call your representatives
This past Monday, 2/28/22, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) released its latest assessment of climate change and once again reiterated “human-induced climate change is causing dangerous and widespread disruption in nature and affecting the lives of billions of people around the world.” The report goes on to add “this is a dire warning of the consequences of inaction.”
And so we wait for our country and the rest of the world to take action. The “Build Back Better Act” introduced into Congress last fall addresses climate change, but it sits in limbo as we wait for a revision that Congress can agree to.
Another promising bill, the “Fossil Free Finance Act,” will be voted on fairly soon. This bill requires the Federal Reserve to mandate that major banks and certain important financial institutions reduce and stop various activities that emit greenhouse gases. We need to hit “big oil” where it hurts. They’ve been lying to us for years, and have known about the dangers of burning fossil fuels at least since 1977. Remember the tobacco companies. All lies and misinformation from them as well.
If you are concerned about climate change and want to make a difference, please call your congressmen and ask for their support in passing the “Build Back Better Act” and the “Fossil Free Finance Act.” It is very important that they hear from us.
