Letter to the Editor: Can Republicans make just one woman’s life better?

All I can say is thank you to Mark Mihevc for his letter of April 29 titled: How Would Republicans Make American’s Lives Better.

In the 23-years I have resided in Plumas County I have never even heard this question voiced on any level let alone our local politics. How have Republicans made life better in Plumas County? Why is any sort of economic development squashed before it even takes hold? Why is the only business model that seems to gain any traction a new version of a thrift store? Why doesn’t our community have maybe just one bus connection to Reno so that cash strapped workers don’t have to spend food money on gas?

I recently saw a young woman sitting on the curb in front of the Portola Post Office, in freezing cold. I asked her if she was waiting for someone to pick her up. She said she was waiting for the bus which wasn’t scheduled to arrive for another 3 hours! I gave her a ride back to Quincy during which she described her desperate search for a job which depended on local transit to get her to potential employment opportunities. She was currently living in a tent somewhere in Quincy where a local merchant allowed her to come in and use the washroom to clean up in preparation for her job interviews. Why does such basic infrastructure as public transportation seem to be such a non existent priority in Plumas County?

I hope Republicans can make just one young woman’s life better. The reverberations will be felt all the way to the White House, because if we don’t care about our own well being why should they?
