Letter to the Editor: Opposite effect

Editor’s note: The letter writer indicated this is “Deja Vu, reprint of letter written during the 2014 Russian invasion or Ukrainian Cromia”

In a novel effort to control atomic weapons, Ukraine surrendered the third largest inventory in exchange for the protection of its borders. Common sense seems to transcend centuries, whether it be muscats or nukes. “ Firearms are second only to the constitution in importance, they are the people’s liberty’s teeth.”{George Washington}

“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and will lose both.” {Ben Franklin}  Considering the Ukrainian experiment, the stalled Syrian disarmament and Iran’s ruse of developing a “safe” nuclear source may be an unintended side effect of what seem to be a worthy goal.
