Letter to the Editor: Portola Family Resource Center is closed

Editor’s note: Mr. Derby has brought this to the attention of the city of Portola and the Plumas County Board of Supervisors. The board directed staff to contact the Plumas Crisis and Intervention Resource Center (PCIRC) for an explanation. Plumas News is also looking into the situation. (UPDATED: Just learned it’s a temporary closure. More information to follow.)

The Portola Resource Center has closed its doors to the public. It is the only warming center in Portola. It also offered free faxing, photo copying, computer use, telephones for the last ten years. It also offered free showers, laundry facilities and food to those in need. It had a warm homey atmosphere with a small livery and a TV.

Most importantly it offered counseling for sexual abuse, rape counseling, grief counseling.

There is a huge need for this center.

I was there having some copies made (there is no other place in Portola I know of). An elderly woman came in to use the phone to call in her IHSS hours. She didn’t have a telephone or computer.

There is a huge need for the Family Resource Center here in Portola.
