Bailey Creek Women
Last week’s play was cancelled due to rain. Next week will hopefully be beautiful weather and is our last official play date, with an after play get together.
Graeagle Meadows Men
The Graeagle Men’s Golf Association (GMGA) had a lot of activity the weeks of Sept. 9 and 16. First, on Wednesday the 11th Men’s Play Day saw a very unusual occurrence. Most golfers, as they age, hope to shoot a score that equals their age. At 84 years of age GMGA Member Norm Nichols had a gross score of 73, 11 shots better than his age. We don’t know if that is a record, but if not, it should be. In the two-ball net competition, Dave Dierking and Bill Hopp took first place with a 93, Bill Bates and Norm Nichols second with a 94 and John Grasso and Jay Hendrick was third with a 95. There were six skins awarded, three to Norm Nichols, and one each to Bert Bellows, John Capdeville and Bill Bates.
On Friday and Sunday the GMGA Club Championship was held. The overall Club Champion was Bob Laxague, the Senior Club Champion was Grand Mayfield, and second was Burt Bellows. In the Super Senior division (over 70) Tom Taylor was the low gross Champion, John Capdeville was the net Champion, with Jack Gilbert second and John Scott third.
Following the Club Championship the shoot out for the season-long par three event was held. Each week, on Wednesday and Friday, the closest two players to the par three third hole record their names until there are 10 names. Then, each week, if someone hits a shot closer than the last name on the list their name goes on the list and the person in tenth place is removed. The 10 qualifiers were: Mike Gibson, John Scott, Norm Nichols, Dan Anderson, Tom Taylor, Jack Gilbert, Dennis Chegwin, Chuck Wiedner, Chuck Franck and Bill Hopp. Only six of the 10 qualifiers were able to attend. Tom Taylor won the Shoot Out and John Scott finished second. No one else hit the green and all were awarded third place. Play was followed by appetizers and celebration at the Restaurant at Graeagle Meadows.
On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the game of the day was low net and “Skins.” The winner was Dan Anderson with a net 71, with Bob McIlroy second with a 72. There were three “Skins,” one each by Tom Fregulia, Dan Anderson and Tom Balestri.
