Men’s golf in Graeagle
Tuesday games July 27 started with a semi-final match between Jim Foug and Bert Bellows. Jim won the match 2 and 1 and so is the first of two players in the match play final for 2021.
The following day, GMGA played their ever-popular one-man scramble. In this format each player played from the forward tees and was allotted two mulligans per hole. The caveat is that the mulligans cannot be used consecutively, on the same shot. The winner was Ron Clark who shot a net 55 while Bert Bellows was right behind in second place with a net 57. There were three men tied for third, John Grasso; Tom Fregulia and Norm Nichols who each came in with a net 58. The results for the Friday games are still a mystery, but the GMGA men played.
The previous Tuesday games, July 20, with the GMGA travel team hosting Plumas Pines at Graeagle Meadows. The men of GMGA overcame the Plumas Pines team with the score of 28.5 to 16.5.
The following day games July 21 were a 4-man net best ball with one ball counted on par 3’s, two balls counted on par 4’s and 3 balls counted on par 5’s. First place was taken by the team of Mark Yuill, Bryan Hansen, Norm Miller and Walley walk who came in with a score of 132. Second place went to the team of Dan Anderson, Andy Knudsen, Dan Friedman and Steve Peterson who shot 133. Net skins were taken by Mark Yuill with a 3 on 5, Chuck Franck with a 2 on 10, Dan Friedman with a 2 on 14, Bert Bellows with a 2 on 15 and Andy Knudsen with a 1 on 16. Friday game results were again a mystery and unknown.

Twenty GMWGC members competed July 28 to become the July Ace of Aces Qualifier and, therefore, to also compete in the end of season Ace of Aces Playoff. A player needs only to qualify one time each season to be eligible to play in the Playoff. Congratulations go to the July Ace of Aces Qualifiers: Low Gross (a tie), Cindy Hannah and Sharon Russell, both with a score of 88; Low Net, Ginger Holladay-Houston, with a net score of 67.
The game of the day was Three Little Pigs in which, after play was completed, each player subtracted the scores on her three worst holes from her gross score, then subtracted her handicap, for her game score. And, the winners were: Flight One: First Place, Ginger Holladay-Houston (47); Second Place, Marla Garrett (49); Third Place, Renee Miller (52); and, Fourth Place, Cathy Churchill (53). In Flight Two: First Place, Chris Spencer (48); Second Place, Kathy Khalar (49); and, Third Place, Lois Childress (51).
Eighteen players competed July 22 in a game called “Odd Holes” and it is played like this: scores on odd numbered holes 1, 3, 5, etc., are counted minus one-half of the player’s handicap. First Flight winners included: First Place, Maria Garrett, with a score of 33; Second Place, Holly Anderson (36); and, Third Place, Cindy Hannah (38). In the Second Flight: First Place, Bev Reynolds (34.5); Second Place, Dee Walker (38); and, Third Place, Diane Forsberg (38.3). There were no “chip-ins”.
At Whitehawk
Whitehawk Ranch Ladies Golf Club held its monthly “Ace of Aces” competition July 22, which culminates in a tournament to be held September 7. Each month, the golfers with the lowest gross and net scores qualify for the tournament. Barbara Competello and Patty McNamara both qualified with gross scores of 80. They join previous qualifiers Michele Violett, Brenda Knott and Marcia Zeigler. July net winners were Cindy Hannah and Betty Lease, both scoring 71. They will join Katy Magliano and Pat Luther during the final competition. The Whitehawk lady golfers have one more opportunity in August to qualify for the “Ace of Aces” final.
Members of The Whitehawk Ranch Ladies Golf Club enjoyed a fantastic “Pairings Party” potluck dinner July 12 at the home of Katy Magliano. Two-person teams competed in the annual Member-Member Tournament. The next day, 10 teams (each with a high and low-handicapper) began the competition of “Best Ball With a Couple of Twists.” In Flight 1, Michele Violett and Mary Ann Crowe took top honors with a score of 65; Patty McNamara/Pat Luther came in second with a score of 67.
