Tigers are a team to watch

The Portola Tigers launch into season play this week with the first official league game yesterday, Jan. 8, against the Biggs Wolverines. Check the sports section next week for details on that game’s outcome. Biggs is ranked just above the Tigers in the Mountain Valley League and both teams are currently miles ahead of the competition.

But for now, the Tiger ladies take off in 2019 with a strong pre-season record of 11-2, the two represented by a pair of close losses to Biggs.

The team is led by four seasoned seniors: Maddie Wilson, Natalie Rodriguez, Maddie Boyd and Emilee Stewart. A trio of juniors provide the core of continuity: Elizabeth Stanton, Emily Sheridan and Margaret Canseco. Three strong sophomores fill in the balance: Mya Wilson, Annie Folchi and Abby Klemensrud.

In December, the girls won six games in row and the future looks promising. A home game will be played for Tiger fans next week with the Loyalton Grizzlies on Monday, Jan. 14, at 5:30 p.m. League play will continue Tuesday, Jan. 15, at PHS as the Tigers take on the CORE Butte Roadrunners at 5 p.m.

Four home games show up later in the season against the Chester Volcanoes, the Quincy Trojans, the Greenville Indians and the final game of the season is Friday, Feb. 8, at 5 p.m. taking on the Esparto Spartans.
